What is a blog? |
|
Technically speaking, a blog is nothing more than a set of web pages that act as an online journal or diary. Blog entries — or postings — are usually arranged in reverse chronological order, so that you see the most recent posting first, followed by the next most recent posting, and so on. The term blog comes from the longer, more formal term weblog, itself a contraction of web log. Almost no one uses weblog anymore, blog is the appropriate terminology. A person who writes blog entries is called a blogger. A proper blog is more than just a set of web pages, however, it's an entire ecosystem for managing, organizing and linking information together. Blogs allow non-technical users to easily create new entries and for visitors to leave comments about those postings. Blogs can be linked together using trackbacks. People can use blogrolls to find other interesting blogs. Blog content is usually transformed into a syndicated feed (usually referred to simply as a feed) that special software can read to track new and updated postings.
